Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees 5–10 m tall.

Stems: With colored sap.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades orbicular–ovate to broadly ovate, 60–100 cm long. Margins entire. Petioles 30–60 cm long. Stipules 6–15 cm long.

Flowers: Flowers in staminate flowers in panicles 15–20 cm long, bracts pink pistillate flowers in dense, bracteate clusters. Flowers unisexual. Calyx valvate in bud; Calyx of staminate flowers pink, subglobose, 3–4-lobed or 3–4-toothed; Calyx of pistillate flowers urceolate or cupuliform, lobed or divided, persistent. Corolla (petals) absent. Stamens in staminate flower ± 10; anthers tetrathecal pistillate flower Stamens absent. Ovary superior (pistillate flowers), 2-celled; styles ca. 10 mm long, connate at base. Staminate flower ovary absent.

Fruit: Capsules 2–3–celled; 8–10 mm long; glabrous; each valve armed with 2 spine-like processes. Seeds with a fleshy seedcoat.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Low elevation mesic to wet areas and disturbed mesic valleys.

Elevation Range: 0–220 m.
